Sinema’s Independent Switch Tightens Democratic Senate Map for 2024
Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema announced Friday her decision to leave the Democratic Party and register as an independent, a move that has significant implications for the Democratic Party’s landscape heading into the 2024 Senate elections.
While Senator Sinema’s change in party affiliation alters the composition of the Senate, it does not immediately shift the balance of power within the chamber. She has indicated that she will continue to caucus with the Democratic Party. This means the Democrats will still maintain a 51-member caucus, including their new independent members.
Prior to this announcement, the Democratic caucus consisted of 49 Democrats and two independents (Senator Angus King of Maine and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, both of whom caucus with the Democrats). With Senator Sinema’s decision, the caucus now comprises 48 Democrats and three independents.
This realignment introduces a new layer of complexity for Democrats as they strategize for the 2024 elections. The departure of a declared Democrat, even one who caucuses with the party, could impact fundraising, messaging, and voter outreach efforts in Arizona and nationally. It also raises questions about Senator Sinema’s future electoral prospects and her role in a closely divided Senate.
The shift is likely to intensify focus on the upcoming election cycle in Arizona, a state that has become increasingly competitive. The Democratic Party will need to navigate this new political reality as they aim to retain their Senate majority in 2024.
