**Llantwit Major and Llanmaes Residents Take Lidl Supermarket Fight to Welsh Government**
**Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan** – Residents of Llantwit Major and neighbouring Llanmaes have escalated their battle against plans for a new Lidl supermarket, taking their appeal directly to the Welsh government.
The proposed development on land separating the two communities is staunchly opposed by locals who fear it will erode the rural character of the area and merge the distinct villages.
The primary concern revolves around the preservation of the green buffer zone between Llantwit Major and Llanmaes, which villagers argue is crucial for maintaining their separate identities. Opponents also cite potential increases in traffic congestion, noise pollution, and the adverse visual impact of a large retail development on what is currently an open, green expanse.
The move to involve the Welsh government’s planning inspectorate comes after the Vale of Glamorgan Council reportedly granted planning permission for the Lidl store earlier this year. This appeal mechanism allows residents to challenge local council decisions they believe are flawed or detrimental to the community.
Lidl, for its part, typically argues that new stores bring significant investment, create local jobs, and offer increased retail choice and competitive pricing for residents.
The Welsh government will now appoint a planning inspector to review all evidence, including the original planning application, the council’s decision, and the residents’ objections, before making a final determination. This process could take several months.
