**Heathrow CEO Warns Against Third Runway Abandonment: ‘Huge Missed Opportunity’**
Heathrow’s chief executive, Thomas Woldbye, has issued a stark warning that abandoning plans for a third runway would represent a “huge missed opportunity” for the UK economy.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Woldbye urged the government to clarify its position on the controversial project, following recent comments from the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, which have fuelled speculation about a potential policy shift.
Woldbye stressed the importance of expansion for the UK’s global competitiveness, job creation, and economic growth. He told the programme, “It would be good to know” the government’s definitive stance, highlighting the airport’s readiness to proceed.
The long-debated expansion project, which received parliamentary approval in 2018, has faced persistent legal and political hurdles. While previous Conservative administrations had supported the scheme, the current government’s commitment has appeared less certain, particularly after Prime Minister Sunak’s recent remarks on infrastructure projects.
Proponents of the third runway argue it is essential for increasing the UK’s airport capacity, enhancing trade links, and maintaining Heathrow’s status as a leading global aviation hub. Conversely, environmental groups and local residents have consistently opposed the expansion, citing concerns over increased noise, air pollution, and the project’s significant carbon footprint, which they argue conflicts with the UK’s climate change targets.
The airport chief’s intervention underscores the ongoing pressure on the government to provide clarity on a project that remains a key battleground between economic development ambitions and environmental protection imperatives.
