‘Come all the way’ back to EU, French finance minister tells UK

French Finance Minister Roland Lescure has indeed suggested that the UK should “come all the way back to the EU,” stating that membership enables countries to better tackle global challenges.

This statement, made to the BBC, reflects a recurring sentiment among some EU officials and pro-EU advocates who believe a closer relationship, or even full reintegration, would be mutually beneficial for addressing complex global issues from economic stability to geopolitical strategy.

While such calls are not new, they run contrary to the current stance of the UK government, which has repeatedly ruled out rejoining the EU single market, customs union, or the bloc itself. The Labour Party, currently leading in opinion polls, has also committed to not rejoining the EU, the single market, or the customs union, though they seek a closer trading relationship with the bloc.

Lescure’s comments highlight the perceived benefits of EU membership from the perspective of many within the bloc, particularly concerning collective action and influence on the international stage. However, the political hurdles and public sentiment in the UK currently make a full return to the EU seem like a distant prospect.
